A Halloween costume should be chosen to reflect what you would really like to be. For many, this is the opposite of what they are in their daily life. A shy person may become a lion or tiger or even Darth Vader. A usually outgoing person may decide to be a mummy or a mime.

People also like to wear a Halloween costume that is outrageous. Favorites include being a crash test dummy, any creature from Star Wars, the Crypt Keeper and the killer from Scream.

Children, especially very small ones, like to wear costumes that are characters they are familiar with. These include characters that they see on the television and ones from favorite storybooks. Little girls like to dress up as princesses or cute animals. There are many plush animal Halloween costumes available at retail stores and online.

If you live in a cold climate they are perfect to pull over a sweat suit. Little boys like to dress up as animals, pirates, skeletons or characters from their favorite shows such as Clifford or the Power Rangers.

Older children may want to design their own Halloween costume. Period or historical costumes are popular. Patterns for these costumes are easily found at larger retail stores and fabric stores. Vogue, Butterick and SewEasy make patterns that are historically accurate as well as fun fantasy costumes. If you are sewing a costume allow at least a few weeks before your Halloween party so that you can finish it carefully.

Older children may also make their own costumes from items they have found around the house. Boxes make excellent costumes such as robots or a jack-in-the-box. Old pairs of nylons are perfect to use for Halloween costumes as tails or even use four pairs to make an octopus. Crepe paper can be used as wrapping for a mummy.

Adults usually like to wear realistic looking costumes and sometimes go in pairs with a spouse or friend. Raggedy Ann and Andy, Darth Vader and Princess Leia, a vampire and a victim are all popular Halloween costumes. Adults are also more apt to spring for a rented costume or purchase an expensive well made one from a costume retailer.

An advantage of being older is also being better at applying makeup. Fake scars, gashes, warts, extra fingers and more can be applied using special glue and makeup. Wigs, fake teeth, latex hands as well as creepy contact lenses can be used to make a very scary or wacky Halloween costume.

Animals can also wear a cute Halloween costume. Pet owners can either make a costume themselves or purchase them from a pet store. Cute costumes for cats and dogs that are easy to find are devils, cowboys, princesses, witches and wizards. Measure your cat or dogs chest, girth and length before you set out to purchase a costume so it will be the correct size.

Pet birds can also be dressed up with specialty costumes purchased from a retailer or one that you have made yourself. Train your bird to say trick or treat, dress yourself up like a pirate, and they can go with you on your rounds.

The sky is the limit when it comes to making or purchasing a Halloween costume. This holiday is the one time of the year that you can be something or someone that you have always wanted to be. Have fun and let your imagination guide you in selecting the most unique costume that will be worn on your block.
