Everyone remembers the house on the block that had the coolest Halloween lawn decoration on display. These types of houses usually have it all from trees dripping with toilet paper to faux cemeteries sprouting by their sidewalk.

There is usually a mannequin stalking the trick-or-treaters by the front steps and a creepy recorded voice that scares you when you approach the door. It is easy to create your own unique Halloween lawn decoration ideas with just a few simple items you have gathered from your own home and local thrift shops.

The trick is to plan your spooky yard theme a few months ahead of time so that you will be able to collect all of the items you need. The basic items you will need for most Halloween lawn decorations are black paint or markers, old clothing, Styrofoam blocks in various sizes or sturdy cardboard, wire coat hangers to use as anchors for some of your props, a mannequin if you can find one, pumpkins, old broom handles and straw bales.

A popular Halloween lawn decoration is the scarecrow. You can make it scary or cute, depending on your theme. These are easily made of two broom handles secured in the shape of a cross. Simply dress the scarecrow in old clothes; preferably dress the guy or gal in an old flannel shirt, straw hat and jeans. Stuff the scarecrow with straw newspapers. Secure the outfit on the scarecrow with safety pins.

If you want hands on the scarecrow use old gardening gloves filled with stuffing and held on with safety pins. The head can be made out of an old pillowcase or a medium sized pumpkin. The scariest heads are the ones made of pumpkin and lit with a battery-powered light inside that blinks.

There can never be enough decorated pumpkins to light the way to your door. For safety, light the pumpkins with battery-operated lights. The bonus is that they wont burn out the way candles will do if it becomes windy.

The hollowed out pumpkins can be carved in a variety of ways including the new art designs and embellished with colored beads that will sparkle in the reflected light. Use your imagination to create unique characters out of your pumpkins.

The graveyard is very popular and you can use your sense of humor and even put your calligraphy skills to good use in this Halloween lawn decoration. You can make gravestones out of Styrofoam or cut up cardboard from pizza boxes. If you have the time they can even be made of plywood for a truly sturdy version that can be used each year. Paint the gravestones with white or gray paint and letter with black paint.

Use your sense of humor to add silly sayings such as rest in pieces. Prop up your gravestones with wire hangers pushed into the ground. Tape the gravestones to the hangers with duct tape or push the hanger carefully through the Styrofoam to anchor it to the ground.

If you are lucky enough to find a mannequin at a thrift store or a sale where a clothing retailer has gone out of business you are indeed lucky. The mannequin is a sturdy prop that can be used to throw people off guard and scare them if you are in the mood.

No one expects a mannequin because they seem so life like, and most people don't expect them to be hanging from a tree or sitting on the front porch holding a bowl of candy. If you are especially crafty you can cut a hole in the back of the mannequins head and add light effects to their eyes. Attach a remote operated voice box inside their clothes and you've got a truly creepy houseguest.

It is easy to scare or delight your trick-or-treaters with a few strategic decorations. Remember to make them kid safe and non-flammable for the safety of everyone. Plan ahead and you will be able to shock and amaze your friends with your own unique Halloween lawn decoration ideas.
