The perfect Halloween party needs lots of great decorations and a centerpiece that will entertain and tie together your theme. If you want to unleash your inner artist, you can make your own Halloween table decoration at a fraction of the cost of store bought ones. In addition, your family will have fun creating a special Halloween table decoration that can be used over and over again.

A perennial favorite Halloween table decoration is the haunted house. The items you need to make this craft are your choice of colored craft foam, hot glue gun, utility knife, white lead pencil, yellow vellum, felt-tip marker, ruler and one string of white battery-powered lights.

First, design your home on paper, all four sides. Don’t forget to design your roof and turrets. The design can be as simple or as elaborate as you desire. A great place to find gothic house designs is on the Internet.

Transfer your design from the paper onto the craft foam. Use your utility knife to cut out the doors and windows in the foam. Glue the four sides of the house together; use one-inch strips of the foam glued to the four corners to strengthen the structure. Transfer the roof design to the craft foam and glue it to the top of your haunted house. Glue pieces of the velum cut to size for the windows and doorways to the inside of the house.

Once your creation is dry add any special touches with felt tip markers. Plug in the string of powered lights and place inside of the house. For added interest purchase miniature people, pumpkins and trees and place around your haunted house Halloween table decoration.

A really creepy decoration that you will have fun making is the shrunken head tree. This Halloween table decoration is popular with teenagers and adults alike. Although this craft is a little time consuming, the results are well worth it. The items you need to make this table centerpiece are 2 pieces of 1/2" pressed fiber board, pencil, felt-tip marker, spiral saw, jigsaw, 220-grit sandpaper, tack cloth or rag, paint, paintbrush, string or fishing line, apples, peeler, knife and Spanish moss.

First, decide on the size of your tree. A good size for this centerpiece is two feet high. Then draw a tree with wide branches, at least one and a half inches wide, and the trunk at least twice as wide as a branch, onto the board with a pencil and then once you like the design draw over the lines with a felt tip marker.

Make sure the trunk is wide enough to accommodate a half-inch by eight-inch slot for the other piece of the tree. Use your spiral saw to cut out the tree and use your jigsaw to cut the slot into the trunk.

The first cut out will be your template for the second tree. The second tree will have the slot cut out at the top of the tree instead of the trunk. Slide the two completed pieces together and make sure the tree stands flat on the table and doesn’t wobble. Make any adjustments with your saw and sandpaper. Separate the two trees and paint them as desired. Allow them to dry before putting them back together again.

The next step is to create your shrunken heads. This can be accomplished by carving the heads out of apples and allowing them to dry. If you are in a hurry, slowly dry the apples in your oven at 200 degrees, which may take several hours; otherwise allow them to dry and shrivel up in a cool area for several weeks before Halloween.

When you are ready to assemble your tree tie fishing line to the stems on the shrunken heads and hang from the branches of your tree. Give your tree a finishing creepy look by hanging Spanish moss from the tree limbs and you’ve completed your truly unusual Halloween table decoration.
