Halloween for some is synonymous with wearing a scary Halloween costume. Scary costumes can be store bought or hand made. Really scary costumes are usually the traditional characters that we see year after year in the movies. Freddy Kruger, Michael Myers, the Scream killer are all popular costumes for Halloween.

These particular costumes are also very easy to duplicate. Freddy Kruger only needs a mask and the latex hands with razors that can be easily found in retail stores. Freddy’s clothes can be anything dark that you own topped off with a man’s old fedora hat.

Michael Myers only needs a blank looking facemask. Add your own dark clothing or a dark colored jumpsuit with big boots and a large rubber knife and you’re ready to go door-to-door scaring people. The Scream killer costume is very easy to find at retail stores. All you will need to add is dark colored boots. The Scream killer is a very scary Halloween costume so take off the mask before greeting small children.

A classic scary Halloween costume is that of the vampire. This look is easy to achieve with a little makeup, a white shirt with dark pants and a matching cape. If you can’t find a cape in the Halloween department of your retail store then ask a friend that sews to make one for you. The material for making a cape is inexpensive and the patterns for a cape can be found at any fabric store.

The makeup for the vampire is simple: paint your face white, add black accents around the eyes to make them appear more severe, add a little red around your mouth to look like dripping blood and add some fake fangs.

Another classic scary Halloween costume is Frankenstein’s monster. The costume consists of a jacket and pants that appear to have been outgrown. Cut the sleeves of the jacket and the cuffs of the pants to make them appear ragged. Wear boots that are slightly larger than the ones that you wear. Many costume shops carry accessories for makeup such as scars, warts and even the bolts you will need for this costume.

The store should also sell the cosmetic glue to attach the bolts to your neck. Cover your face in green paint with black accents around your eyes and use black lipstick for a really scary look. Paint your fingernails black as well; after all you are supposed to be a corpse brought back to life.

The mummy is a simple yet scary Halloween costume to wear. If you want an authentic looking costume start at your local fabric store to purchase gauze or muslin material. Tear this material into long pieces that can be wrapped around you. Wear light colored clothing, a white pair of sweat pants and a t-shirt work well, under the mummy wrappings. Secure the wraps by tying them together with small knots and securing them with safety pins to your clothing underneath.

Keep your top separated from your paints in case you need to use the bathroom later. Paint your face with white paint prior to wrapping it. Finish off the scary look with red or green splotches of paint on your face and around your hands to look like rotting flesh.

If you don’t want a traditional scary Halloween costume, scout your local stores for an unusual latex mask. Many companies make a variety of scary facemasks and latex hands that you wear like gloves. Add your own clothing and accessories to give your character a life-like quality. Create your own unique frightening costume this year and get ready to scare your friends and neighbors.
