Having a haunted house set up for Halloween is a lot of fun, and with some creativity you can make it pretty scary, too. It’s obviously important to distinguish whether the decoration of the Halloween haunted house is for children or adults, but in either case, creative is key. If you are working with kids, you want to have fun levels of scary but nothing too traumatizing or frightening. There should be plenty of giggles mixed in with those screams.
When you are working with adults, anything goes. You know your guests and you can tailor the decoration of your Halloween haunted house to what they want, or what you want for them. When you think about decoration, think about the whole package. The front lawn or porch, or even just the front door, no matter where you live, it starts there.
As soon as your guests walk in the door, the environment should surround them. The music, sounds, lighting, should encompass them as if they have not walked into your normal apartment or house, but a totally different place. This takes time to achieve, but it can be done.
One way to change the way things look in your apartment is to put away personal objects, and cover furniture. Another way is to partition things off with sheets or room dividers. This will help guide your guests from room to room to see the horrors that await them.
Lighting is essential. Decorations on your room dividers, furniture, walls, etc. can glow in the dark and a black light is a great effect. I know, it’s been in probably every haunted house you’ve been in, but it works, no? Strobe lights, colored lights, and dim lighting can provide great effects with various fabrics or other materials on the wall – as simple as tin foil – to change appearance. You can change lighting from room to room depending on what theme you have going on in each room.
Music can be the same through out, or you can have various scary screaming and ghost-y sounds happening with each room, too. Of course, with kids Halloween haunted house decorations you will have a room that they get to stick their hands in bowls full of yuck things: eyeballs (grapes), brains (spaghetti), guts (something mushy like peanut butter and jelly). With adults, you can do this or not. It still grosses many of us out.
Part of your Halloween haunted house decoration can even include a cast of accomplices to sneak up behind or beside people and scare the heck out of them. This is much fun for the host and pals. Pick the weak ones. They run.
Decorations for a haunted house are not just about a few things you hang on the wall, you want to create a total environment that people can lose themselves in, kids and adults alike. You don’t want them to feel like their standing in your living room with your friend, Bob, yelling, “Boo!” in their face. It’s only fun if they can be transported a bit, which means taking time to create the total package and make over the space.
It’s an undertaking, but one that you will remember and have a lot of fun with as you find ways to scare the pants off of everyone. After the scaring is over, bring out the punch and the music and dance the night away with the ghosts and the goblins. It will be a Halloween to remember.
