"To infinity and beyond," shout the children dressed as "space ranger" Buzz Lightyear in their Toy Story Halloween costumes as they run and play. And who can blame them? Disney and Pixar's Toy Story films were both great successes at the box office and in the home video market and are very popular with children and adults alike.

As with any popular movie these days, the popularity has given way to mass merchandise tie-ins, and Halloween costumes are a part of that. The popularity of Toy Story has led Toy Story Halloween costumes for children who want to dress as Buzz or Woody for Halloween.

Even though it has been a few years since the second Toy Story film was released, it is still a very popular property for Walt Disney pictures. Toy Story toys and games as well as other merchandise still sell fairly well and every Halloween there is still a demand for Toy Story Halloween costumes.

This means that, since the children who saw Toy Story when it was released in 1995 are probably now too old for trick-or-treating, it is a younger group of kids who are still showing an interest in the movie and its characters. These younger children are the ones who are wearing Toy Story Halloween costumes each year.

Even this long after the movies (Toy Story 2 was released in 1999) it is still relatively easy to purchase a Toy Story Halloween costume from most any retailer that sells Halloween costumes each year. This means that the costumes can be found at most Wal-Mart, K Mart, and Target stores, as well as party shops and costume shops as the Halloween holiday approaches. It is also possible to make a Toy Story Halloween costume at home, but the most easily recognizable costumes will be the store bought ones.

The Toy Story movies are full of memorable characters like Hamm, the piggy bank, Rex, the dinosaur, and Stinky Pete, the prospector (played wonderfully by Kelsey Grammar in Toy Story 2), but most of the Toy Story costumes that you're likely to find — and that kids are likely to want to wear — will be based upon the two main characters of Woody (the cowboy sheriff played by Tom Hanks) and Buzz (the astronaut played by Tim Allen). If you're going to purchase a Toy Story Halloween costume for your child, it had probably better be one of these.

There has not been any definite word whether another Toy Story film will be made, but with the success of other Disney/Pixar films (most notably Finding Nemo and The Incredibles) and the dissolution of the Disney/Pixar partnership (a move that is generally considered a poor decision by Disney management – comparing the numbers on Finding Nemo to those on Brother Bear and Home on the Range kind of makes that clear) it seems unlikely.

It doesn't matter, though, because the Toy Story family is now a part of the extended Disney family and the characters will remain recognizable and known for years to come. It's likely that twenty years from now kids will still want to wear a Toy Story Halloween costume.
